The advice this site gave in its state guides was to look for one credential when hiring a geothermal contractor: the IGSHPA Accredited Installer. We are correcting those guides, because the picture has changed. IGSHPA, the organisation that issues the credential, has replaced its training programs. Its training page lists the Accredited Installer course among four "legacy" courses that are "in the process of being sunset," and says the legacy courses will not be held unless a utility or state or provincial program requires them.
That is a change to the courses, not to the people who already passed them. IGSHPA says its existing certifications and certificates "may be maintained indefinitely" as long as they are renewed and not allowed to lapse, and that "updating to the new program is not required." An installer with a current Accredited Installer credential is not behind and is not under any obligation to retrain. What has changed is the name you should be asking about, and the question you should be asking: not "are you an Accredited Installer?" but "which IGSHPA credential do you hold, and is it current?"
Beyond the credential, a homeowner has four things to verify before signing: the standard the work will be built to, which certifications cover which parts of the system, whether a load calculation was run on the house, and whether two bids can be compared line for line. This page is not a directory โ we do not list contractors, and the "near me" search that probably brought you here is better served by map results than by us.
The Course Is Being Sunset, Not the Credential
Here is the sentence from IGSHPA's training page, in full: "Four IGSHPA 'legacy' courses are in the process of being sunset, the Accredited Installer (AI), Certified GeoExchange Designer (CGD), Certified Geothermal Inspector (CGI), and Certified Residential Designer (CRD)."
Read the list again, because it is not only the installer course. The Certified Geothermal Inspector is on it โ the credential you may have been told to look for when hiring an independent inspector to check the installer's work. So is the Certified GeoExchange Designer, the one you may have been told to want on the person who designs your system. All four courses are being replaced.
The courses are still held in one circumstance. IGSHPA's wording: "At this time, any legacy courses must be scheduled on a case-by-case basis and will not be held unless a utility or state/provincial program requires the course." So the old course is not available to anyone who asks for it; it runs where a utility or a state or provincial program still names it as a requirement.
Now the part that matters for the installer standing in your kitchen. IGSHPA says this about the people who already hold the old credentials: "The IGSHPA certifications/certificates, NATE certification, and AEE certification may be maintained indefinitely, as long as they continue to be renewed (including required CEUs) and they are not allowed to lapse, effective, January 1, 2026." And: "There are paths to the new certifications/certificates if desired, but updating to the new program is not required."
An installer who shows you an Accredited Installer credential that has been kept renewed holds a valid, current IGSHPA credential. They are not out of date. They do not need to have taken the new courses, and IGSHPA has said so. The credential name is on its way out of the training catalogue; the credential itself, in the hands of someone who has maintained it, is not.
"Are you an Accredited Installer?" is a question about a name that people entering the trade now will only earn where a utility or a state or provincial program requires the legacy course, since IGSHPA says those courses will not be held otherwise. Ask instead which IGSHPA credential they hold โ a legacy one or a current one โ and whether it is current. Renewal is the thing to ask about. IGSHPA's condition for maintaining a credential is that it is renewed, with the required continuing education, and not allowed to lapse. A credential that has lapsed is a different thing from one that has been maintained, and a contractor can tell you which theirs is.

The Current IGSHPA Credentials
IGSHPA's training page presents three current certifications, with these acronyms:

Alongside those, the page names three certificate programs, earned by examination and renewable every three years with continuing education: Residential Installation Technician, Residential/Light Commercial Ground Heat Exchanger Installer, and Residential Service Technician. There is also a free online "Geo 101" course. And IGSHPA states what the whole set is built on: "All of the new training is based upon the CSA/ANSI/IGSHPA C448:25 Series Design and Installation Standard for Commercial and Residential GSHP Applications."
Notice the shape of the new list. The old Accredited Installer was one credential for one person. The current programs are split by role: someone who designs a residential system (GRSD), someone who installs the equipment (Residential Installation Technician), someone who installs the buried loop (Residential/Light Commercial Ground Heat Exchanger Installer), someone who services it afterwards (Residential Service Technician), and someone who verifies and inspects the finished job (GSVI). That split is useful to you because it lets you ask who on the job holds which one. The person who sizes your system and the crew who fuses your pipe may not be the same people, and the verification role is distinct from both.
For a homeowner, GRSD is the one to ask about on the design side, GSVI is the one to ask about if you want the finished system checked by someone who did not build it, and the two installer certificates are the ones to ask about for the crew. A legacy credential that has been maintained sits alongside these, not beneath them โ IGSHPA's own position is that updating is optional.
A Standard Is Not a Certificate
A certificate is a statement about a person: they passed an examination, and, under IGSHPA's current rules, they have kept it renewed with continuing education. A standard is a statement about the work: this is how a system of this kind is to be designed and installed. The certificate describes the installer; the standard describes what ends up in your yard.
The standard for this work is published by CSA Group with ANSI and IGSHPA. CSA's own listing gives its title as the "ANSI/CSA/IGSHPA C448 SERIES, Design and installation of ground source heat pump systems for commercial and residential buildings." IGSHPA names the current edition when it describes its training: the "CSA/ANSI/IGSHPA C448:25 Series Design and Installation Standard for Commercial and Residential GSHP Applications."
Write that designation down, and ask for it in the proposal: "Will this system be designed and installed to CSA/ANSI/IGSHPA C448:25?" It is the design and installation standard for exactly this kind of system, IGSHPA's current training is built on it, and a contractor who is willing to put it in the contract is committing to something specific about the work rather than something general about themselves. Whether it is legally required where you live is a separate matter โ the cited sources publish no such requirement, and we did not check fifty jurisdictions.
The distinction matters most while the credential landscape is changing, which is now. A contractor holding a maintained legacy credential can build to the current standard. A contractor with every current certificate can still cut corners. The certificate tells you about the person; the standard, written into the proposal, tells you what you are buying.
Who Is Certified for What: The Machine and the Ground
A geothermal system has two very different halves, and the certifications that cover them are different too.
Inside the house is the heat pump, and inside the heat pump is a sealed refrigerant circuit. That circuit is covered by federal rule. The EPA's Section 608 page states that "technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could release ozone depleting refrigerants into the atmosphere must be certified." Since January 1, 2018, that requirement also covers appliances containing most substitute refrigerants, including HFCs. Anyone who opens the refrigerant side of your heat pump needs a Section 608 certification. Ask who on the crew holds one.
Outside the house is the ground loop: the trenching or drilling, and the pipe fusion that joins it. Here is the part that surprises people. The EPA's Section 608 page does not mention geothermal systems or ground loops at all. Section 608 is about refrigerant. The cited sources publish no federal certification requirement covering the buried loop itself.
That is not the same as saying nothing applies to the loop. Whether licensing or permitting rules cover loop work where you live is a state and local question, and this page does not answer it for fifty states. ENERGY STAR's first tip for hiring any heating and cooling contractor is the right instruction here: "Find out about license and insurance requirements for contractors in your state."
The practical consequence is that "we're certified" is not an answer. It is two questions. Who holds the Section 608 card for the refrigerant work? And what, if anything, does your state require for the loop work, and who holds that? A contractor who answers both, separately, understands their own job.
The Load Calculation
Before anyone can tell you what size system you need, someone has to work out how much heating and cooling your house needs. That number is the load, and the residential procedure for calculating it is ACCA's Manual J. ACCA describes it as "the national ANSI-recognized standard for producing HVAC equipment sizing loads for single-family detached homes, small multi-unit structures, condominiums, townhouses, and manufactured homes."
ACCA also says this: "A proper load calculation, performed in accordance with the Manual J 8th Edition procedure, is required by national building codes and most state and local jurisdictions." That is a statement about residential HVAC in general and about code adoption broadly, not a geothermal-specific legal mandate. For you it means something simpler: a load calculation is a calculation about your house โ that is what "sizing loads for single-family detached homes" means โ and the inputs are things about your house.
So the question is simple. Ask whether they ran a Manual J load calculation. Then ask to see it. Not the number โ the calculation, with the inputs: the square footage, the insulation, the windows, the orientation, whatever they measured. If the size was taken from the equipment you have now rather than from a calculation, ask why.
ENERGY STAR's checklist puts it this way: "The contractor should spend significant time inspecting your current system and home." The ENERGY STAR Checklist, With a Loop Field in the Yard
ENERGY STAR publishes a short checklist for hiring a heating and cooling contractor. It is written for heating and cooling contractors generally, not for geothermal, but every item on it has a geothermal translation, and the translation is where the value is.
Comparing Bids Like-for-Like
Two geothermal bids for the same house can come back looking like they are for different houses. The cited sources publish no geothermal-specific bid template, and no official list of what causes the price differences between competing geothermal bids โ so we are not going to give you an "industry standard" line-item breakdown, because there is not one we can point to.
What we can give you is our recommendation for making the bids comparable. Ask each contractor to break their number out into the same six parts:
- Loop field โ the trenching or drilling, the pipe, the fusion, the yard restoration.
- Equipment โ the heat pump and its major components, by model number.
- Ductwork or distribution โ whatever moves the heat around the house, whether that is new, modified, or left alone.
- Electrical โ the work to connect it.
- Permits โ what is being pulled and who is pulling it.
- Commissioning โ the start-up and verification of the finished system.
This is our framing, not a published requirement, and a contractor is free to organise a proposal differently. But once the bids are in the same six boxes, the reasons for a price difference stop being a mystery and start being a conversation. One bid assumed a horizontal loop and the other assumed vertical bores. One includes ductwork changes and the other assumes your ducts are fine. One prices a verification visit and the other does not mention one. Those are all legitimate differences, and every one of them is a question you can now ask.
The one line we would push hardest on is the last. Ask what "commissioning" means in each bid โ what gets measured, what gets documented, and whether you get a copy. A system that was started up and a system that was verified are not the same thing, and the price may reflect that.
Questions to Take to the Meeting

- What, if anything, does this state require for the loop work โ the drilling or trenching โ and who holds it?
- What insurance do you carry, and can I see the certificate?
The design
- Did you run a Manual J load calculation for this house? Can I have a copy, with the inputs?
- Who designed the system, and what is their credential?
- Will the system be designed and installed to CSA/ANSI/IGSHPA C448:25, and will you put that in the proposal?
The loop
- Have you walked the yard? What loop type are you proposing, and why that one for this lot?
- Who is doing the drilling or trenching โ your crew or a subcontractor โ and what is their credential?
- What will the yard look like when you leave, and who restores it?
The paper
- Can you break the bid into loop field, equipment, ductwork or distribution, electrical, permits, and commissioning?
- What does commissioning include, what gets measured, and do I get the documentation?
- Which parts of the warranty are the manufacturer's and which are yours, and for how long?
- Can I have references for geothermal installations specifically, not furnace or air-conditioner jobs?
What you are listening for is whether the contractor recognises the questions: why you are asking about C448:25, which credential they hold and when it was renewed, where the load number came from. The conversation should get easier as it goes, not harder.
Signals Worth Weighing
We are not going to give you a list of "red flags" that implies contractors are out to get you. But some answers should carry weight, and here is how we would weigh them.
They cannot tell you whether their IGSHPA credential is current. An Accredited Installer credential is real, and IGSHPA says it may be maintained indefinitely. The condition is renewal, with continuing education, and not letting it lapse. A contractor who holds one can tell you when it was last renewed. If they cannot, ask again.
They cannot say which certification covers which part of the job. The refrigerant circuit is covered by a federal certification requirement. For the loop, the cited sources publish no federal certification requirement, and what applies is a state and local question. A single "we're certified" that does not resolve into two answers has not answered.
There is no load calculation, or you cannot see it. The sizing has to come from somewhere. If it did not come from a Manual J on your house, ask where it came from.
The quote arrived without a site visit. ENERGY STAR's checklist says the contractor should spend significant time inspecting your system and home. For geothermal, the yard is part of the home.
The proposal is a single number. A bid that will not break out into parts is a bid you cannot compare with anything, and it is a bid in which "commissioning" may mean nothing at all.
The standard is not in writing. A contractor who talks about C448 and will not put it in the proposal has told you which of those two things they are willing to be held to.
The references are all furnace jobs. Heating and cooling experience is not loop-field experience. Ask again, specifically.
None of these, alone, is a verdict. Weigh them together, and weigh them against what the contractor did answer well.
