Type "geothermal heat pump kit" into a search bar and you'll find pages of packages that look, at a glance, like a whole geothermal system in a box: pipe, pumps, fittings, fluid, sometimes a tidy diagram of a house with loops under the lawn. The picture that listing paints โ order the kit, dig a trench, enjoy cheap heat โ is not what you're buying.
Products marketed as a "geothermal kit" may well be ground-loop and flow-center packages rather than complete systems. Treat that as a possibility to check against the listing in front of you, not a surveyed market fact: seller contents could not be verified for this review, so confirm the package scope directly with the seller. The heat pump itself, the excavation, the ductwork, the electrical work, and the permits are often separate โ separate purchases, separate labor, and in some cases separate legal requirements. Which of them a given package does or does not cover is exactly what the seller's itemized scope has to tell you. A kit can be a legitimate way to buy the loop side of a project. It is not a shortcut around the rest of it.

A "Kit" Is a Loop Package, Not a System
A residential geothermal installation has two halves. Inside the house sits the heat pump โ the appliance that actually heats and cools, with its compressor, refrigerant circuit, and air handler or water connections. Outside (or below) the house sits the ground loop โ the buried piping that trades heat with the earth, plus the pump assembly that circulates fluid between the loop and the heat pump.
Kits live on that second half. They package the buried-loop materials and the circulation hardware โ the parts of the project that are essentially plumbing rather than refrigeration, and a part some capable owners may choose to handle. The mistake that costs people money is reading a kit price as a system price. It isn't. The kit is one line item in a project that also includes the heat pump appliance, the digging or drilling, the ductwork or hydronic distribution, the electrical hookup, and whatever permits your jurisdiction requires. Every one of those sits outside the box.
What Kit Packages Typically Bundle
Because no specific vendor's contents could be verified, treat the following as the categories to ask about rather than a typical inventory โ a map of the kit concept, not a list anyone's product is certified to match. When you shop, the seller's own itemized parts list is the only list that counts.
Loop pipe. The component these packages are built around: the buried pipe that forms the ground loop itself. Quantity and configuration are exactly the kind of vendor-specific detail no listing makes verifiable, so don't take any footage figure on faith โ ask how the length was determined and what heating and cooling load it assumes.
Headers and fittings. The manifold hardware that joins multiple loop circuits into single supply and return lines running to the house. Heat-transfer fluid. The water/antifreeze solution that actually carries heat through the loop in climates where the loop can approach freezing.
Hose kits. The flexible connections that tie the flow center to the heat pump.
Every item on that list is on the water side. None of it touches the refrigerant circuit, and none of it puts heat into your living room by itself.

An unverified parts list is worse than no list at all. Get the itemized list, in writing, from the seller you're actually considering.
What the Kit Does Not Include
The gap between the kit and a working system is where a project budget grows. In a loop-side package of the kind described above, all of the following are separate:
The heat pump itself. Do not assume the appliance is in the box. The common kit model is loop-side hardware, and the heat pump โ the warranted, refrigerant-bearing machine โ is a separate purchase. If a particular package does bundle one, the parts list will say so explicitly. If it doesn't say so, it isn't in there.
Excavation or drilling. A loop package supplies pipe; it does not dig the trench or bore the hole. Vertical boreholes in particular require specialized drilling equipment.
Ductwork or distribution. The kit moves heat between the ground and the heat pump. Moving heat between the heat pump and your rooms โ ducts, air handler connections, or hydronic distribution โ is a separate scope entirely.
Electrical work. The heat pump needs a proper electrical connection, and that work is outside the kit.
Permits. Requirements for this kind of work vary by jurisdiction and can't be settled from a distance: find out what your local authority requires before anything is dug or connected, and price that into the project.

The Federal Line: EPA Section 608
Somewhere in every DIY geothermal discussion, someone says "refrigerant work is illegal for homeowners." That's close enough to be dangerous and wrong enough to matter. Here is what the federal rule actually says.
EPA's Section 608 regulations govern work on equipment containing refrigerants. Per EPA's technician certification requirements page (last updated July 15, 2026):
"EPA regulations (40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F) under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act require that technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerants into the atmosphere must be certified."

"Any person servicing, installing or disposing of stationary appliances (except the disposal of small appliances) must be a section 608 certified technician."

The federal trigger in both passages is the activity and the certification, not the job title. Federal law does not say "only a licensed HVAC company may touch this." It says the person doing covered refrigerant work must hold Section 608 certification, and EPA's own definitions can reach owners and operators โ so a homeowner is not categorically barred from becoming certified. What that does not mean is that certification clears the path: state and local licensing, permit requirements, electrical and building codes, and the manufacturer's own warranty terms all still apply on top of it, and any one of them can be the binding constraint. EPA's own guidance even notes that "apprentices are exempt from certification requirements provided they are closely and continually supervised by a certified technician."
The certification requirement has teeth on the purchasing side too. From the same EPA Q&A:
"The seller of the refrigerant is responsible for verifying that the buyer either 1) is a certified technician, or 2) employs a certified technician."

So an individual who is not certified generally cannot buy stationary-appliance refrigerant for their own use, and cannot perform covered refrigerant work. The exception EPA writes into the sales rule is a business one: a non-certified person may transact on behalf of a company that employs a certified technician, where the seller verifies and documents that relationship. A properly certified person satisfies the federal Section 608 requirement for covered work โ subject to whatever else applies locally. That describes the federal requirement only; state and local rules still apply.
What Section 608 does not cover matters just as much, and a common shorthand gets the trigger wrong. Section 608 is not limited to "opening a sealed circuit." It reaches the covered maintenance, service, repair and disposal activities that could release refrigerant, which EPA's own material describes as including attaching and detaching hoses and gauges, adding or removing refrigerant or components, and cutting refrigerant lines. Trenching, burying loop pipe, joining loop circuits, and filling the loop with heat-transfer fluid are ordinarily outside that rule โ they are not refrigerant work. But "outside Section 608" is not the same as "unregulated": local plumbing, well, excavation, environmental and building-code requirements can all apply to the shovel-and-pipe side, and they vary by jurisdiction (see the permits note above).
In short: the loop package in the kit is plumbing, and federal refrigerant rules don't reach it โ but once the job reaches the refrigerant side, whoever does it must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whether they're a contractor or the homeowner. That trigger is broader than cutting into a sealed line: EPA's rule reaches maintaining, servicing, repairing and disposing of the equipment, including adding or removing refrigerant.
Will a Kit Install Void the Warranty?
It depends on the manufacturer โ and the two warranty documents quoted below set materially different conditions in writing.
ClimateMaster: yes, installer qualifications matter. ClimateMaster's current residential warranty terms โ from the Residential Tranquility 30 (SE) Premier Series installation, operation and maintenance manual, revised June 1, 2026 โ exclude from coverage, verbatim:
"(6) Products which have not been installed and maintained by a qualified and trained HVAC contractor;"

The same document separately excludes damage from the "opening of the refrigerant circuit by unqualified personnel," and ties one path for starting the warranty term to "proof of date of start-up of the Product by a qualified and trained HVAC contractor." Read the scope carefully, because it matters for a kit buyer: that condition attaches to the Product ClimateMaster warrants โ the heat pump โ not to a loop package bought from someone else. If a qualified contractor installs and maintains the unit, buying the loop materials yourself is a different question from self-installing the equipment. Where it bites is the owner who installs the heat pump itself: under these terms that is a genuine warranty problem regardless of how well the work was done.
WaterFurnace: no such condition appears. WaterFurnace's residential 10-year limited warranty certificate โ a sample certificate, form MM1590MW dated 09/10 โ excludes "product failures or performance issues arising from or related to improper ordering or installation of Product or related components," but it states no requirement that the installer be qualified, licensed, or certified โ no installer-qualification condition appears in this sample certificate. Improper installation is excluded; owner installation, as such, is not. The document also says on its face that it is a sample and is not valid for any application requiring a warranty, so the certificate that ships with a real unit is the one that controls.
Two manufacturers, two answers, both taken from the primary documents โ and two documents is not a survey of the industry. What "most manufacturers" require would take a much larger stack of warranty certificates to establish. What these two do show is that the difference is large enough to change the math on a kit-based project, which makes the warranty certificate for the specific unit you're buying required reading before you order anything.
One more caution on the WaterFurnace side: a sample certificate dated 09/10 is a specimen, not necessarily the terms on the unit shipping to you this year. Who a Kit Actually Makes Sense For
The kit route suits a specific kind of buyer.
A kit makes sense for an owner who understands they're buying the loop-side materials for a larger project: someone comfortable with serious outdoor plumbing work, able to arrange (or perform) the excavation, and planning to bring in the right people for the parts they can't touch โ refrigerant-circuit work by someone with Section 608 certification, electrical connection, and whatever their jurisdiction requires on permits. For that buyer, the kit is a materials purchase, and the question is simply whether the package's contents and the seller's design support match the project.
A kit makes much less sense for someone who read a listing as "geothermal system, some assembly required." If the plan assumed the appliance was included, the digging was trivial, and the fine print didn't apply, the kit route runs into all three assumptions at once โ and the warranty section above shows the terms can exclude the work even when the workmanship is good.

Ask any seller these questions, and get the answers in writing, before you buy:
- Exactly what is in the box? An itemized list: pipe (length and how that length was determined), headers and fittings, flow center, fluid, hose kits. If it's not on the list, it's not in the kit.
- Is the heat pump included? Don't infer from the product photo. Ask.
- What load and site assumptions is the package built on? A loop package sized for someone else's house and soil is the wrong package, however complete it is.
- What design support comes with it? Loop layout, circuit lengths, flow rates โ who answers those questions after the boxes arrive?
- What does the heat pump manufacturer's warranty say about installer qualifications? Get the actual warranty certificate for the actual unit and read the exclusions โ as shown above, manufacturers genuinely differ.
- What's the plan for the refrigerant side? Whoever performs covered refrigerant work must hold EPA Section 608 certification. Know who that person will be before you order pipe.
- What does your jurisdiction require? Permit and licensing requirements vary by location, and no article โ this one included โ can answer that for your address. Verify locally before committing money.
