ClimateMaster builds geothermal heat pumps in Oklahoma City and has done so for a long time. Its Trilogy 45 sits in the same efficiency tier as anything else sold for a house, and one of its features โ€” Q-Mode โ€” does something genuinely different with your hot water that most comparison articles either skip or describe wrongly.

This review covers what the company actually publishes: the current lineup, the real mechanics of Q-Mode, efficiency figures with the test conditions that produced them, and the warranty terms.

Who Owns ClimateMaster Now

ClimateMaster is headquartered in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Its About page traces the company's origins to Florida in the late 1950s; sources disagree on the exact founding year, so we'll leave it at the decade.

The ownership question has a cleaner answer, and it is frequently reported out of date โ€” including by third-party cost sites still describing ClimateMaster as an LSB company. ClimateMaster used to be part of LSB Industries. That ended: LSB closed the sale of its Climate Control business on July 1, 2016, and ClimateMaster now sits under NIBE, the Swedish heating-technology group, via the Climate Control Group.

NIBE also owns WaterFurnace, acquired in 2014. So two brands routinely pitched against each other in geothermal shopping share a corporate parent.

They remain distinct products from distinct engineering teams with different control platforms and different dealer networks, and a ClimateMaster quote and a WaterFurnace quote are genuinely different machines. But "get competing quotes from the two big names" is less adversarial advice than it sounds โ€” remember that before you try to play one quote against the other.

The 2026 Residential Lineup

ClimateMaster's public product listing covers the Trilogy 45 (QE and VE) and the Tranquility family โ€” SE/SZ, SJ/SP/SA/SK, and the TBW/TCW/SW water-to-water models. Of these, the Trilogy 45 QE and VE are the fully variable-speed units.

That listing is not the whole story in 2026. ClimateMaster's July 2026 dealer guide also carries newer low-GWP Trilogy SQ/SV and Tranquility SE/SZ products reflecting the industry's refrigerant transition. The public site and the dealer guide are not in sync, so ask your dealer which models are actually orderable and on which refrigerant.

A note on the Trilogy 35. If you've read an older guide โ€” including, until today, ours โ€” you may have seen a "Trilogy 35" listed. It does not appear in ClimateMaster's current residential product listings. There's no formal discontinuation notice we could find โ€” just its absence from the current lineup. If a contractor quotes you one, ask whether it's current stock and what parts support looks like.

For a homeowner, the practical split is straightforward: the Trilogy line is the variable-speed premium tier, and the Tranquility line covers the range beneath it, including water-to-water models for radiant floor and hydronic applications.

Q-Mode: What It Actually Does

Q-Mode is ClimateMaster's domestic hot water function, and it is easy to confuse with a desuperheater. It isn't one. A desuperheater is a small heat-recovery device that captures waste heat as a byproduct when the system happens to be running; Q-Mode is a distinct operating mode with its own hardware.

Here is the actual hardware operation, from ClimateMaster's installation manual. In Q-Mode, the unit runs the compressor, the ground-loop pump, and a dedicated domestic-hot-water pump, circulating water from your tank through the unit's DHW heat exchanger. The system can do this on its own โ€” heating water alone with no call for heating or cooling โ€” or while it is cooling the house.

Those two capabilities are the point:

Heating water alone means the unit functions as a ground-source water heater on demand, rather than only capturing scraps when it happens to be running for space conditioning. A desuperheater gives you hot water when the house needs heating or cooling; Q-Mode gives you hot water when you need hot water.

Heating water while cooling the house is the genuinely elegant case. In cooling mode, the system is removing heat from your house and has to put it somewhere. Q-Mode puts some of it into your water tank instead of entirely into the ground. In a hot climate with a long cooling season, that's the same energy doing two useful jobs.

Whether that pencils out depends on your hot water usage and your cooling season length. A large household in a hot climate has the most to gain. A two-person household in a short-summer climate has less. But price it out โ€” the potential saving is real and it's specific to this feature.

The Efficiency Numbers, With Their Conditions

The Trilogy 45 QE's published figures under ISO 13256-1 are 45.1 EER in cooling and 5.1 COP in heating, as GLHP part-load maxima โ€” GLHP meaning a closed ground loop, the configuration used in typical residential installations.

The Tranquility 30 TE publishes part-load values up to 34.4 EER and 7.0 COP. Read those as two separate maxima โ€” a peak cooling figure and a peak heating figure measured under their own conditions โ€” not as one operating point the machine hits simultaneously.

Now, an important caution, because this is exactly where geothermal spec sheets mislead people.

ClimateMaster's literature for the Trilogy 45 QE also carries an 8.7 COP figure. That number is real, but it is a WLHP rating โ€” water-loop heat pump, at 68ยฐF entering water temperature โ€” which is a different loop configuration from the closed earth loop in a typical home. It is not the number to compare against a rival's ground-loop COP, and it is not what your house will do.

The same caution applies to the Tranquility 30 TE's 7.0 COP: these are part-load maxima at specific entering-water temperatures, not seasonal averages.

The rule for reading any geothermal spec sheet: a rating is only meaningful with its loop type and entering-water temperature attached. The Warranty Is the Strongest Part of the Pitch

ClimateMaster publishes 10 years on all unit parts and on specifically identified ClimateMaster accessories โ€” identified being the operative word, since that is a named list, not every accessory in the system โ€” with a standard 5-year labor allowance, optionally extendable to 10. ClimateMaster's document RP851 governs actual coverage and limitations, so that is the one to read before you rely on any of it.

A flat 10-year parts figure is easier to plan around than coverage that varies by model, and a stated labor-allowance term you can extend is a concrete thing to compare against a rival's quote.

Two caveats still apply, as they do with any manufacturer in this space. A labor allowance contributes toward a service call rather than necessarily covering it in full, so ask what the allowance actually pays on a compressor job โ€” our repair guide lists what that job actually costs out of pocket. And warranties in this category commonly require registration within a set window after installation to secure the full term โ€” confirm that deadline with your installer at commissioning. Reliability: What the Record Shows

We searched the CPSC recall database and ran general web searches for recalls or class actions involving ClimateMaster geothermal heat pumps in early August 2026. Nothing surfaced.

That's not a clean bill of health โ€” it's what those searches turned up on that date, not a review of every court docket.

It is also not reliability data. No independent body we could find publishes failure rates by brand for residential geothermal equipment. Claims that one geothermal brand is measurably more reliable than another generally trace back to personal experience rather than published data.

What a ClimateMaster Actually Costs

ClimateMaster does not publish prices. Its own cost article directs homeowners to dealers for an estimate, and that is the whole of the manufacturer's public position on the question. WaterFurnace does the same. This is normal for residential geothermal โ€” the loop makes every job different โ€” but it means every dollar figure you find online is somebody's estimate, not the manufacturer's price.

Both are consumer-estimate sites rather than primary sources, and neither publishes its methodology. One caution on the Geothermal Finder page specifically: it still describes ClimateMaster as an LSB Industries company, which has been wrong since 2016 โ€” a reminder to weigh where a number comes from.

Treat the spread between those two sources as informative rather than contradictory: one is pricing a complete vertical-loop job, the other is pricing a box. The gap between them covers everything that isn't the box โ€” the loop field, labor, plumbing and electrical, controls, permits, any duct changes, commissioning, and the contractor's overhead and margin.

On brand premium: we found no reliable published data on ClimateMaster's installed-price premium over budget brands. Equipment midpoints from PickHVAC imply roughly $1,800 above a budget brand like Century โ€” an equipment-only comparison, not an installed figure.

WaterFurnace figures from WaterFurnace's published 700A11 specifications; ClimateMaster figures from the sources cited below. The dash in the hot-water row means WaterFurnace does not publish an equivalent dedicated hot-water mode for the 7 Series โ€” not that it lacks hot-water capability, which it addresses with a desuperheater.

On efficiency, WaterFurnace's 7 Series edges it โ€” 47.0 versus 45.1 EER, 5.2 versus 5.1 COP, both as published maxima under their respective rating conditions. That is a narrow margin between two units in the same tier, and it is small relative to the variation introduced by loop design, sizing and local geology.

The clearer differences are elsewhere. ClimateMaster's warranty is more legible: a flat 10-year parts term and a specified labor allowance, versus a term that varies by system. And Q-Mode is a real functional capability, not a marketing label โ€” of the two units in this table, only the ClimateMaster has a dedicated hot-water mode. If hot water is a big line on your energy bill, price that feature out.

The takeaway

ClimateMaster's Trilogy 45 competes at the top of the residential market on efficiency, backs it with the more legible warranty of the two NIBE brands, and offers one feature โ€” Q-Mode โ€” that no spec-sheet comparison captures: it can heat your domestic water on demand, including while it cools your house. Its closest rival shares its parent company, and its headline efficiency numbers are within noise. Buy on the warranty document, the hot water math, and the installer.

Who Should Actually Buy One

Buy the Trilogy 45 QE or VE if you want variable-speed performance and either the warranty structure or Q-Mode tips it for you. The hot water case is the strongest argument: a household with heavy hot water demand and a long cooling season is the exact profile Q-Mode was designed for, and that saving recurs every year.

Buy into the Tranquility line if the budget doesn't reach the Trilogy tier. At 34.4 EER the Tranquility 30 TE is an efficient machine, and the money saved may be better spent on the loop field than on the cabinet.

Look at the water-to-water models (TBW/TCW/SW) if you're running radiant floor heating or another hydronic application, which is a different design problem from forced air.

The caveat that applies to every brand in this category applies here too: the installation is not a detail. Loop design, load calculation and commissioning all bear on the efficiency you actually get, and between two units in the same performance tier they are the variables with the most room to go wrong. Start with whether your property suits geothermal and get a proper load calculation before the brand argument even begins.

On budgeting: the 30% federal residential clean energy credit under IRC ยง25D expired for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Any older review or brochure that nets a 30% credit out of its payback math is stale. Run your numbers on the 2026 reality.

Ten years on all unit parts and on specifically identified ClimateMaster accessories, with a standard 5-year labor allowance that can optionally be extended to 10 years. ClimateMaster's RP851 document governs the actual coverage and limitations โ€” read that one before relying on the summary.

How much does a ClimateMaster cost installed? ClimateMaster publishes no prices and directs homeowners to dealers. Third-party consumer-estimate sites put a 3-ton vertical-loop installation at $20,000โ€“$35,000 (Geothermal Finder), with difficult rock pushing past $50,000, and ClimateMaster equipment alone at $4,000โ€“$6,500 (PickHVAC, 2024 figures). Neither publishes a methodology, and the gap between equipment and installed price covers the loop field, labor, plumbing and electrical, permits, commissioning and margin.

Has ClimateMaster had any recalls? We searched the CPSC recall database and ran general web searches in early August 2026 and nothing surfaced. That reflects those searches on that date, not a full docket review โ€” and it is not reliability data, which we could not find published by brand for residential geothermal at all.
