Type "who makes GeoStar geothermal" into a search box and the answer that comes back most often is Enertech Global. The brand's own current paperwork disagrees.

That paper trail is short and primary: GeoStar's product-line brochure (document BR1510MG, dated 02/24), the current catalog on geostar-geo.com, all 218 GeoStar records in ENERGY STAR's certified geothermal heat pump dataset โ€” and one WaterFurnace installation guide whose relevance will be obvious three paragraphs from now. Between them, those documents also answer the other questions GeoStar shoppers ask: whether the brand is current, how its equipment rates, and where it stands next to WaterFurnace and ClimateMaster. One scope note up front: GeoStar sells both a residential line and a commercial water-source line. Everything below covers the residential line.

Who Actually Makes GeoStar

The answer you'll usually find is Enertech Global. The current documents say something different.

Three primary sources consistently identify the same manufacturer:

  1. GeoStar's own product-line brochure carries the imprint, verbatim: "Manufactured by WFI Industries, 9000 Conservation Way, Fort Wayne, IN 46809-9794." That's document BR1510MG, dated 02/24, ยฉ2024 WFI.
  2. A current WaterFurnace installation guide (document IGV5-0006WA, dated 10/25) is copyrighted "ยฉ2025 WaterFurnace International, Inc., 9000 Conservation Way, Fort Wayne, IN 46809-9794." The street address is identical, down to the ZIP+4.
  3. ENERGY STAR's certified-products dataset lists the responsible partner on every one of the 218 GeoStar records: "WaterFurnace International, Incorporated" on 208 of them and "WFI Industries" on the other 10.

So the manufacturer attribution is not ambiguous: GeoStar equipment comes from WFI Industries / WaterFurnace International, at WaterFurnace's Fort Wayne, Indiana address.

Where does the Enertech answer come from? A 2014 NIBE quarterly report said NIBE had acquired Enertech Global, which marketed under WaterFurnace and GeoStar brands. That is a 2014 statement about Enertech โ€” not a current statement about GeoStar. Enertech's own current brand page describes consolidating Hydron Module and Tetco into its Enertech and GeoComfort brands in 2025, and GeoStar is not among the brands it lists. The old answer has simply outlived the documents that produced it.

Manufacturer attribution is not the same as an ownership chart. No current corporate document spells out GeoStar's legal ownership chain in so many words. Who builds the equipment and stands behind the ENERGY STAR listings is documented; who owns whom is not.

Is GeoStar a Real, Current Brand?

Yes, on both the evidence a buyer can check and the evidence a regulator keeps.

The brand's site, geostar-geo.com, is live with a full residential product catalog, a dealer locator, and a warranty registration portal. That's the surface-level check.

The deeper check is the ENERGY STAR certified dataset, which is the machine-readable record behind the ENERGY STAR Product Finder. It currently holds 218 GeoStar records, with qualification dates running from February 7, 2022 through January 15, 2026 โ€” meaning new GeoStar models were still being certified weeks into 2026. All 218 records are flagged as meeting ENERGY STAR's Most Efficient criteria, and all list their markets as the United States and Canada.

Qualification dates running into January 2026 settle it: GeoStar is current.

The 2026 Residential Line

The current residential catalog on geostar-geo.com sells three forced-air families, plus splits, combos, and hydronic units. Every entry on the page is offered "with Low GWP" โ€” the R-454B refrigerant version โ€” alongside a legacy R-410A document set (more on that split below).

One asterisk from GeoStar's own hydronic listing worth carrying into any pool-heating conversation: the equipment is "Not suitable for direct use with chlorinated water." If a dealer pitches pool or spa heating, ask how the design isolates the heat pump from the chlorinated loop.

Again, this is the residential line. GeoStar also sells a commercial water-source line, which is outside this review's scope.

The Brochure Numbers: Part Load vs. Full Load

GeoStar's brochure headlines "28.0 EER | 4.8 COP." That figure belongs to the Aston Advanced and Aston series, and the spec table on the same PDF tells you what it is: the top of those columns' part-load range, rated under AHRI 13256-1 at GLHP โ€” ground-loop heat pump, meaning a closed earth loop. The full-load row for the same columns reads 17.6โ€“22.0 EER.

The brochure presents every family this way: the big number is the part-load number, with the full-load row printed beneath it. A reader comparing brochures needs to know which row they're looking at, because a part-load number from one brand laid against a full-load number from another is not a comparison at all.

Three things to notice in GeoStar's own table. Aston Advanced and Aston publish identical ranges โ€” and the brochure describes each of them as "One of our most efficient units." The Sycamore does not appear in this brochure's spec table at all; the Sycamore figures elsewhere in this article come from GeoStar's website and the ENERGY STAR certified dataset, not from BR1510MG. And the indoor and outdoor splits share a part-load range, separating only on the full-load row (19.9 vs. 17.1 EER at the top).

The part-load/full-load pattern runs across every column: the Cypress's 25.7 EER and the Magnolia Plus's 22.3 EER are also part-load tops on the same closed-ground-loop (GLHP) rating, each with a lower full-load row beneath it.

Two questions to ask about any geothermal efficiency number โ€” GeoStar's or anyone's: "is that part load or full load?" and "rated on which loop?" The answers pin a figure to its test conditions โ€” the conditions you'd have to hold constant before setting it against another brand's number. What the ENERGY STAR Records Show

The brochure is GeoStar's document. The ENERGY STAR certified dataset is the regulator's โ€” and it lets you see the certified ratings for the whole brand, by family and by loop type. One structural difference between the two: where the brochure prints a part-load and a full-load row for every family, the certified dataset publishes a single EER and a single COP per record, with no load split. The dataset holds 218 GeoStar records; 163 of them publish both figures, and the ranges below are computed across those 163:

Four things to take from this table.

In every family where both loop types appear, the open-loop range rates higher than the closed-loop range. The Sycamore's closed-loop water-to-air records top out at 33.0 EER; its open-loop water-to-air records reach 47.6 EER. Same family, different test water. Any GeoStar efficiency claim that names a number without naming the loop type is telling you half a fact โ€” and this cuts across brands, which is why our roundup of the most efficient geothermal heat pumps refuses to crown a winner until the loop type is on the table.

Certified records are not the same thing as the current catalog. Cypress, 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series all appear in the certified dataset โ€” but none of them is on GeoStar's current residential products page, which sells Sycamore, Aston, and Magnolia Plus (plus the Aston splits, combos, and hydronics). A certification record means a model was certified and the record is still live; it does not mean the model is on the current price sheet. If a dealer quotes you one of these families, ask directly whether it's current product or remaining stock.

Magnolia Plus has no records in this dataset under that name. Across the full 218 GeoStar records, the certified families are Aston (122), 5 Series (40), Sycamore (22), 3 Series (20), Cypress (8), and 7 Series (6). GeoStar's own products page describes the Magnolia Plus as ENERGY STAR rated; the brand's certified records carry no Magnolia Plus entries. Those two documents do not line up under that series name, and neither one says why. If a Magnolia Plus quote leans on an ENERGY STAR claim, ask the dealer to show the certification for the exact model number.

The two documents rank from different rosters. In the certified dataset, the Sycamore sits at the top of the brand's ranges โ€” consistent with the website's "our most efficient unit" claim, comparing matching loop types. The brochure has no Sycamore column, and its own table tops out with the Aston Advanced and Aston. Those are two separate top-of-range statements from two separate documents, not one continuous ranking.

One Series Name, Two Refrigerants

On GeoStar's product pages, every current series is offered "with Low GWP" โ€” the R-454B version โ€” while a legacy R-410A document set stays posted alongside it.

The certified dataset shows the same transition in numbers: of the 218 GeoStar records, 124 list R-410A as the refrigerant and 94 list "Other" โ€” which GeoStar's own site identifies as R-454B, the lower-global-warming-potential refrigerant the industry is moving to.

Practically, that means a buyer in 2026 can be choosing between two refrigerants under a single series name, and the paperwork in circulation covers both generations. So make it explicit on the quote:

Searching for the SS6065, S6065, GS716, or RX 615?

A meaningful share of GeoStar searches are for specific model numbers: SS6065, S6065, GS716, RX 615.

These model numbers do not appear in GeoStar's current residential catalog, and they do not appear in the model records of the ENERGY STAR certified dataset. With no catalog entry and no certified record, there is nothing public to infer their specifications from โ€” the documentation has to come from a dealer, against the exact model number on the unit.

If one of these numbers is on a unit you own or a quote you're holding:

  1. Photograph the full data plate โ€” model number, serial number, and refrigerant type.
  2. Take it to a GeoStar dealer through the locator on geostar-geo.com and ask for the submittal sheet for that exact model number.
  3. If you own the unit, check its registration status through GeoStar's warranty registration portal.

How to Read GeoStar's Marketing Claims

GeoStar's site makes the case for geothermal in strong terms. Its claims, set next to the documents:

"Use the solar energy stored just below our feet." That is GeoStar's framing of how ground-source heat pumps work โ€” marketing language, not a rating or a measurement.

"Can reduce your annual costs โ€ฆ by as much as 70% per year" and "no other gas furnace, air conditioner or heat pump comes close." These are the manufacturer's claims about its own product category. Your actual savings depend on what you're switching from, your electric rates, and your loop โ€” none of which a brochure knows.

"Deliver an astounding five units of energy for every one unit of electrical energy." That's a COP-of-5 claim, and the certified records give it useful context: GeoStar's certified COPs top out at 5.50 โ€” on the Sycamore's open-loop water-to-air records. The brand's closed-loop water-to-air records top out at COP 4.80 (Aston). So five-for-one exists in the certified data โ€” but only in open-loop configurations. Loop type, again, is the whole story.

None of it is unusual โ€” manufacturer marketing is manufacturer marketing โ€” but the certified records are what it should be read against.

GeoStar vs. WaterFurnace and ClimateMaster

GeoStar equipment is manufactured by WFI Industries / WaterFurnace International, at the same Fort Wayne address WaterFurnace publishes on its own literature, with WaterFurnace International named as the ENERGY STAR partner on nearly all of GeoStar's certified records.

So a GeoStar quote and a WaterFurnace quote carry the same manufacturer attribution and the same Fort Wayne address โ€” while the ownership chart behind them, again, goes unpublished. What actually differs is the channel: GeoStar sells through its own distributor and dealer network โ€” the Sycamore, by GeoStar's own description, is offered only through its "elite" distributors โ€” and carries its own catalog, literature, and warranty registration.
