Carrier sells four residential geothermal heat pumps in the United States in 2026, and nearly everything a buyer can read about them was written by Carrier. The rest is forum threads and dealer pages; there is no independent review of the brand.
Two things in that material deserve attention before anything is signed. The first is the warranty. The GCA product page describes the coverage two different ways, and the certificate that resolves them also caps labor at an allowance schedule and excludes the ground loop outright. The second is the efficiency figure, which Carrier publishes for each model as a closed-loop and open-loop pair without naming the test standard behind either number.
What Carrier Sells in Geothermal in 2026
Carrier's US residential geothermal page lists four products. This is the complete list as Carrier presents it, with the compressor description from each product page:

Two packaged units at different tiers, one split, and one water-to-water unit for hydronic applications such as radiant floors. Every family is described as two-stage, with the GBA's 1.5-ton size the single-stage exception. Sizing is where the pages go quiet. Carrier's product pages give no nominal tonnages for the GCA or GZA, and the GWA and GBA pages say only "Available in various sizes." The GBA's 1.5-ton and 2-to-5-ton split is the only sizing detail Carrier gives for any of the four.
If you have been reading older material, including forum threads and third-party comparison tables, you will see the GT-PX, GC and GB designations. Those are the previous generation. Carrier publishes no cross-reference from the old codes to the new ones, and no discontinuation date. If a contractor quotes a GT-PX, GC or GB unit, ask whether it is current stock and which generation's spec sheet the numbers on the quote come from. Figures from the two generations should not be mixed.
Everything above is Carrier describing its own catalogue, and it says nothing about how any of the four units performs.
What the Efficiency Numbers Mean, and What Is Missing
Carrier publishes each model's efficiency as two lines, one per loop type. For the GCA, verbatim: "Closed loop up to 27 EER, Open loop up to 37 EER" and "Closed loop up to 4.4 COP, Open loop up to 5.2 COP." The other three product pages follow the same pattern. All four, as Carrier publishes them:

Each figure is half of a pair. The same GCA posts 27 EER on a closed loop and 37 EER on an open loop. A bare "27 EER" and a bare "37 EER" describe one unit under two conditions, and neither means anything on its own. Any efficiency figure that arrives without a loop type attached, on a quote or in a forum post, should go back with one question: closed or open? The figure for the loop you are installing is the one that applies to you.
"Up to" is not a rating. These are marketing maxima, not the rating of every tonnage and configuration Carrier sells under each family name. The unit on your quote, at its own tonnage and blower setting, carries its own rated figure, and that is the one worth having.
Nothing says which test produced them. Carrier's product pages name no ISO 13256 rating point and no AHRI reference beside any of the eight figures above. A geothermal EER is only meaningful with the loop condition and the test standard attached; Carrier publishes the first and not the second. The practical move is to get the ISO 13256-1 rating (ISO 13256-2 for the water-to-water GWA), or the AHRI certificate, for the model number on the quote.
Against the ENERGY STAR floor
ENERGY STAR's key product criteria for geothermal heat pumps, effective January 1, 2012, set these minimums by product type:

The GCA, GZA and GBA compare against the water-to-air rows and the GWA against the water-to-water rows. Every claimed maximum in Carrier's table sits above the floor for its row: the GCA's closed-loop 27 EER / 4.4 COP against 17.1 / 3.6, the GWA's closed-loop 22.6 EER / 3.5 COP against 16.1 / 3.1, and so on down the columns.
That comparison is a manufacturer's marketing maximum set against a certification floor, and it is all it is. We have no ENERGY STAR certified-product listing for any Carrier geothermal model number. If a rebate program requires certification, check the listing for the model on your quote rather than inferring it from the page.
The Warranty, Read Carefully
Carrier's GCA product page describes its warranty twice, and the two descriptions do not match. The certificate the page links to resolves them, and it adds two conditions the page does not mention.

"10-year parts and labor limited warranty upon timely registration.¹"

"To the original owner, when product is used in an owner-occupied residence, a 10-year parts limited warranty upon timely registration of your new equipment. Warranty period is 5 years if not registered within 90 days. Jurisdictions where warranty benefits cannot be conditioned on registration will automatically receive a 10-year parts limited warranty. See warranty certificate for complete details."

Read against the page, the certificate says the footnote was the incomplete statement, not the panel. For an original owner in an owner-occupied residence, the GCA's parts coverage is ten years whether or not the unit is registered. What registration changes on the GCA is labor: five years unregistered, ten years registered. A registered original owner of a GCA, GZA or GWA gets ten years of parts and ten years of labor. The GBA is different. Registration moves its parts term from five years to ten, and its labor term is five years either way.
What "labor" means in the certificate
Ten years of labor coverage is not ten years of labor paid. The certificate defines the labor warranty as an allowance. Verbatim:
"a labor allowance intended to cover the labor incurred by licensed HVAC technicians... only to the extent specifically set forth in the then existing labor allowance schedule provided by Company's Warranty Department. Actual labor costs are not covered by the limited labor warranty to the extent they exceed the amount allowed under said allowance schedule."

The labor warranty pays a scheduled amount per repair, set by Carrier's warranty department, and any labor bill above that amount is the owner's. Carrier does not publish the allowance schedule itself. That is the line to ask about before signing: what the current allowance is for the model on your quote, and what the dealer charges for the same job. The difference between those two numbers is what "10-year parts and labor" leaves with you.
The ground loop is excluded
Exclusion 10 of the certificate, verbatim: "Failure, damage, repairs, maintenance, design failures, installation or application of geothermal loop (including anti-freeze), or water well." The loop, the antifreeze in it, and any water well are outside Carrier's warranty entirely. Whatever coverage the loop carries has to come from the installer or the loop contractor, in writing, in a separate document. Ask for it.
Before you sign: get these in writing for the unit on your quote. The current labor allowance for that model, next to the dealer's own rate for a compressor or coil job. The loop warranty, from whoever is installing the loop, since Carrier's certificate excludes it. And the registration confirmation, filed within 90 days.
The 90-day cliff
On registration, the certificate says: "If properly registered within 90 days, the warranty period will be extended an additional 5 years, (except in California and Quebec and other jurisdictions that prohibit warranty benefits conditioned on registration...)" On the GCA, GZA and GWA the term that extends is labor, five years to ten. On the GBA it is parts, five years to ten. In California, Quebec and other jurisdictions that prohibit conditioning warranty benefits on registration, the extended term applies without it.
The clause does not say 90 days from what, so confirm the start date with the dealer. Put registration on the commissioning checklist, do it while the installer is still on site if you can, and keep the confirmation.
Other owners, other uses
A subsequent owner gets five years of parts and five years of labor on every family, with no registration required. Outside an owner-occupied residence, the certificate says: "The warranty period is one (1) year on parts with no limited labor warranty." The coverage table carries no separate compressor line; the compressor falls under the parts term above, and the certificate gives it no longer term.

The Refrigerant Question: Puron Advance and R-454B
Carrier brands the refrigerant across its geothermal line Puron Advance™; all four product pages name it. Carrier's own "What is Puron Advance" page identifies it as R-454B, and the owner's manual linked from the GCA page is titled for R-454B. Those are two names for the same thing, and it is worth separating them from the older name they resemble: Carrier's original Puron is R-410A. Same brand family, different refrigerants. A spec sheet or a technician saying "Puron" could mean either.
Carrier's marketing claim for the new refrigerant, verbatim: "Puron Advance™ refrigerant delivers a 75% decrease in global warming potential." That is Carrier's own characterization, and the comparison is against Carrier's previous Puron (R-410A), not against zero.
As with every brand mid-transition, both generations of documentation can be in circulation at once, and the previous-generation GT-PX, GC and GB units may still be in dealer stock, so the quote should say which refrigerant the unit uses and which manual the dealer is working from.
The regulation, as EPA wrote it
The federal backdrop is EPA's Technology Transitions final rule under the AIM Act. EPA's fact sheet on that rule, originally published October 2023 and updated December 2023, sets a 700 GWP limit for the category it describes as "residential and light commercial air conditioning and heat pump systems," with an installation compliance date of January 1, 2025.
The fact sheet never names geothermal, ground-source or water-source equipment, so it does not settle how the rule applies to this product. What it does settle is narrower than the way it gets quoted:
- The rule sets a GWP ceiling. It does not name R-454B or any other refrigerant as required. Federal law does not "require R-454B."
- It is not a blanket "R-410A was banned on January 1, 2025." The rule is structured by equipment category and by date, distinguishes products from systems, and carries exceptions, including an interim one that allows certain systems using pre-2025 components to be installed through January 1, 2026.

Who Actually Builds It: An Open Question
Carrier's published geothermal pages do not say where, or by whom, the four current units are manufactured.
In the Reddit threads that appear in search results for Carrier geothermal, commenters offer confident answers naming another manufacturer. No AHRI record or corporate filing supports or refutes the claim.
That absence is a practical problem rather than a point of brand pride. Who builds the unit bears on where replacement parts come from and whose service documentation the technician works from. It also bears on who is answering the phone in year eight. Resolve it on the quote: ask the dealer, in writing, who manufactures the unit and where service parts are sourced, and treat any answer without paper behind it as unconfirmed.
What independent evidence exists
Very little. Outside Carrier's own pages there are individual forum posts, and forum posts are anecdotes, not data. One owner, in mid-2026, asked whether any contractor at all services residential geothermal near their town in Illinois. That is one person in one place, not a description of Carrier's dealer network, but service coverage is a question to settle before installation rather than after. Carrier's geothermal pages give no figure for its dealer network size and nothing on geothermal-specific training within it.
Carrier's own material fills the space where independent evidence would sit. Its longevity claim, for instance, is that indoor geothermal equipment can last "up to 20 years with minimal maintenance." No study, sample or method accompanies it.
What the Cited Sources Do Not Publish
None of the material cited here publishes:
- Who manufactures the current GCA, GZA, GWA and GBA.
- Model-by-model AHRI certified ratings, only "up to" maxima with no standard attached.
- Nominal tonnages, beyond the GBA's 1.5-ton and 2-to-5-ton split.
- The labor allowance schedule that caps the labor warranty.
- Current US ENERGY STAR certification for any model.
- Reliability data, failure rates, or an owner-satisfaction survey. True of the residential geothermal category generally, not only Carrier, which means every "Carrier is reliable" or "Carrier is not" online is one person's experience.
- Dealer network size or geothermal-specific competence.
- A cross-reference from the GT-PX, GC and GB designations to the current codes, or a discontinuation date for the old ones.

The takeaway
Carrier's GCA page says "10-year parts and labor" in the panel and "10-year parts" in the footnote, and the certificate linked from the same page settles it: a registered original owner, in an owner-occupied residence, gets ten years of both. The same certificate pays labor only up to an allowance schedule Carrier does not publish, and excludes the geothermal loop, its antifreeze and any water well outright. Its efficiency figures are closed-loop / open-loop pairs for every model, published as "up to" with no test standard named. Before signing, get three things in writing for the exact model number: the current labor allowance next to the dealer's rate, the ISO 13256 or AHRI rating at your loop type, and the loop warranty from whoever is installing it. And register within 90 days, or the labor term on a GCA stays at five years instead of ten.
